Kismet is the westernmost community on Fire Island just a shell’s throw from the Lighthouse. Residents enjoy its reputation as a town where anything goes.
Many houses are rented by groupers, who play on the beach by day and party into the night on their deck and at the bars. Singles share the town amicably with families and homeowners, many who were singles here.
Many of the houses have names like Bananas, The Edge, Margaritaville, or Life is Better at the Beach. The atmosphere is fun, relaxed, and live and let live.
The town center is on the bay, with a grocery store, two restaurants, basketball court, public tennis courts, playground, and a pizza shop on the dock.
At the two bay front restaurants, The Inn and Surf’s Out, diners can enjoy a nice lobster while watching the sunset. Later on, singles meet here to keep the fun going.
The nearby playground is great for the children to run around while lunch or dinner is being prepared.
Later on, you can dance the night away when Surfs Out turns on the music or play pinball at the Inn.
Recreation is what we do best on Fire Island, and Kismet knows how to do it right.
Tennis players can enjoy a game or have a private lesson at the Camelot tennis courts, just a few steps from the ocean.
Boating enthusiasts from all over the island and the south shore come to catch bluefish and snapper, dock at the Marina, and have a late night beer or three at the Inn.
There’s the ocean of course, where day trippers carry over coolers, dunk in the ocean and maybe catch a game of volleyball on the beach, or at least watch one.
The many Year-Rounders who make the island their home are intrepid souls, with a strong sense of community. The Kismet Community Association has an active membership committed to town affairs.
The volunteer Fire Department was built by Kismet residents, and they have funded their own lifeguard protection. On Friday nights, the residents sell flowers on the dock as a town fundraiser.
There are several places to stay. There’s Margarita Villas and The Boatel on the bay front and many other short term rentals.
Group shares are welcomed here and there is a good time to be had in Kismet. It’s a keg kind of town.
