Dunewood is well manicured, tranquil, and beautifully landscaped. There are about 100 homes, built more recently than neighboring Saltaire.
Dunewood was a fully planned community with 100 identical homes offered for sale in 1958, founded by business partners Maurice Barbash and Iwrin Chess. The original homes have given way to newer homes that remain charming and welcoming.
There are no group rentals here, and the town maintains its appeal to families.
The zoning is strictly residential, and there are no stores or restaurants here. Shopping and facilities are in nearby Fair Harbor.
The Dunewood Yacht Club is the center of activity for the local avid sailors. The club offers top notch sailing lessons on their own fleet of sailboats and professional level training for racing.
The club has snagged trophies for the annual Fire Island sailing regatta competing with all the community yacht clubs.
The town also has two tennis courts, for use by Dunewood Property Owners Association members. A trophy is awarded to the annual end-of-summer tennis tournament winners and everyone joins the celebrations.
The Dunewood annual beach party is a celebrated tradition in this tranquil Fire Island retreat.
